Why it happens

One machine, two seasons of work

In many heat pump homes the air handler, with its backup heat strips, sits in the attic.

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of the house; in winter it pulls heat in from the outdoor air. Because it works in both seasons, it has more parts that can fail: a reversing valve, a defrost control, outdoor sensors and electric backup heat in the air handler.

Some behaviour that worries homeowners is normal. On damp winter mornings the outdoor unit goes into defrost, stops its fan and may release a cloud of steam for a few minutes. Defrosting that never ends, ice that builds into a solid block, or cold air from the vents for long periods is a reason to call.

Quick checks for a heat pump

  • Thermostat in Heat or Cool as intended, not Emergency Heat unless you chose it.
  • Both breakers on, including the one for the indoor air handler and heat strips.
  • A clean filter. Restricted airflow causes high pressures in heating mode too.
  • Leaves, mulch or debris clear of the outdoor coil, and snow or ice not piled against it on the rare freeze.
  • Steam for a few minutes during defrost is normal. Constant ice is not.

The inspection

What gets checked

Defrost control

Boards and sensors that decide when to melt frost off the outdoor coil.

Reversing valve

The valve that switches the system between heating and cooling.

Heat strips

Electric backup heat in the air handler for cold nights and defrost cycles.

Capacitors and contactors

The same starting parts that fail on air conditioners.

Refrigerant charge

Heat pumps are sensitive to charge in both modes. Leaks have to be found and fixed.

Repair or replace

An old heat pump with a failed compressor is usually a replacement conversation.

Price ranges

Budgeting for heat pump repair & replacement

Figures to help you plan. Your price comes from the contractor after the system has been seen.

Typical planning ranges (not quotes)
WorkTypical planning rangeDepends on
Diagnostic visit$90 – $200Time of day, travel
Defrost board or sensor$250 – $700Part, brand, access
Heat strip element or sequencer$200 – $600Kilowatt rating, air handler model
Reversing valve replacement$1,000 – $2,500Labour, refrigerant recovery and recharge

Use these figures to plan, not to budget to the dollar. They are typical planning ranges, not quotes, local averages or price guarantees. Only the contractor can price your job, after looking at the equipment: size, refrigerant, access, parts and anything found on the visit all shift the number. More ranges are in the price guide.

Deciding

When a heat pump is due for replacement

A compressor or reversing valve on an older heat pump is a large repair, and high winter bills from constant backup heat are often a sign the system is struggling.

If you are weighing a new system, the replacement page explains sizing and what a complete quote should include.

FAQ

Homeowners also ask

Why does my heat pump blow lukewarm air in winter?

Heat pump air often feels cooler than furnace air even when it is working. If the house won't reach the set temperature or the backup heat runs constantly, have it checked.

What does Emergency Heat do?

It turns off the outdoor unit and heats with the electric strips only. It's useful if the outdoor unit has failed, but it costs more to run, so use it only until the repair.

Does a heat pump work in a hard freeze?

Air-source heat pumps lose capacity as temperatures drop, and backup heat makes up the difference. Southwest Louisiana gets few hard freezes, which is one reason heat pumps are common here.
