On the Gulf Coast, an air conditioner that is too big can be as much trouble as one that is too small. An oversized unit cools the air quickly, shuts off, and leaves the moisture behind, so the house feels cold and clammy at the same time. Sizing should come from a load calculation done for your house; the capacity on the old unit's label is only a starting clue.
Newer equipment uses lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, so the indoor coil, line set and sometimes the air handler change with the outdoor unit. Ask the installer to quote the complete job: outdoor unit, matched indoor coil or air handler, line set, stand or pad, electrical, drain, thermostat and any permit.

Before the installer comes out
- Find the age of the current system. The manufacture date is on the outdoor unit's data plate or coded in its serial number.
- Note the rooms that never cool well and anything that feels damp, such as musty closets or sweating vents.
- Gather recent repair invoices. They help the installer see what has already been replaced.
- Ask your electric utility whether any program currently applies to the equipment you are considering.
- Get more than one written quote, and check each one covers the same scope.
The inspection
What gets checked
Load calculation
Sizing based on insulation, windows, orientation, ductwork and the moisture load.
Matched equipment
Outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler and thermostat designed to work together.
Ductwork
A new system on leaking attic ducts won't perform. The installer should check them.
Stand or pad
Many homes here set the outdoor unit on a raised stand. Ask what height and fastening is planned.
Permit and paperwork
Replacements usually need a permit. You should receive model numbers and warranty registration.
Commissioning
Charge, airflow and temperatures checked after installation, not just switched on.
Price ranges
Budgeting for AC installation & replacement
Figures to help you plan. Your price comes from the contractor after the system has been seen.
| Work | Typical planning range | Depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Split-system AC with matched indoor coil | $6,500 – $13,000+ | Size, efficiency, line set, electrical, stand |
| Heat pump system (outdoor unit and air handler) | $7,500 – $15,000+ | Size, efficiency, heat strips, duct changes |
| Single-zone ductless mini-split | $3,000 – $6,500 | Capacity, line length, wall location |
| Raised condenser stand with a new install | $300 – $900 | Height, material, fastening |
Use these figures to plan, not to budget to the dollar. They are typical planning ranges, not quotes, local averages or price guarantees. Only the contractor can price your job, after looking at the equipment: size, refrigerant, access, parts and anything found on the visit all shift the number. More ranges are in the price guide.
Deciding
Comparing quotes fairly
Line the quotes up by capacity, efficiency rating, refrigerant, indoor equipment, what happens to the ductwork, warranty terms and who pulls the permit. A lower figure that leaves out the coil or the line set isn't comparable.
Ask how the installer will handle humidity: variable-speed or two-stage equipment, blower settings and whether a dehumidifier is worth considering. Our humidity page explains why it matters here.
FAQ
Homeowners also ask
How long does a central AC usually last here?
Many systems in hot, humid climates are replaced somewhere between 10 and 15 years, depending on maintenance, installation quality and exposure. Outdoor units near salt air or standing water can corrode sooner.
Is swapping only the outdoor unit an option?
Sometimes, but mismatched indoor and outdoor parts can lose efficiency and warranty coverage, and a refrigerant change normally needs a matched system. Ask the installer to explain the trade-off in writing.
Is a heat pump a sensible choice in Lake Charles?
Heat pumps are common across the Gulf South because winters are mild. On the few cold nights, backup electric heat strips take over. The installer can compare a heat pump with an AC and gas furnace for your house.
